Italian Food Challenge

Last night my beaux and I were trying to decide what we wanted for dinner, I was too tired to cook so Brandon offered…which means we went out.  We live in a smallish area and wanted to stick close to home for our dinner.  Brandon was craving Italian, which I generally avoid like the plague since it seems more wheat and dairy full than any other cuisine (except that I loved it prior to belly issues…so sad).  But being brave, I thought, I would give it a try…and I am glad we went!

We tried this restaurant named Angelinas, which overall had great service, mediocre environment pretty good food and a $5 Happy Hour all evening. First I dug through the menu and thought I would get a salad removing the cheese and getting oil and vinegar just to be safe (Who knew they put cream in a lot of the vinagrettes? I’ll tell you my tummy figured that one out fast, and was pretty rude about how it told me!)

BUT SURPRISE, I was just about to order and shazam, there it was… at the top of the menu right near the word PASTA for the spaghetti section was a little line that said “Ask about our gluten free options.” I almost jumped out of my chair! YAY! They had a good gluten free spaghetti that I could get and replace any “stringy”  dish (no not lasagne or cannelloni) with. I ordered up some spaghetti and meatballs for $5 and was happy as a clam.  No wait, I think I was happier than a clam since I don’t know that clams are that happy.  I was as happy as my dog Elle with a new squeey toy. Yeah that happy… YAY! Spaghetti!

    Saved by the Coconut!

Last night was a chilly evening. All I wanted to do once I got home from work was curl up with some comfort food while I watched the last episode of Game of Thrones. Sadly with my diet, most of my comfort foods like lasagne and mac and cheese are gone by the wayside so I settle for salad or meat and veggies… but I realized I could have Thai Food… some spicy creamy coconut milk simmered with chicken veggies and spices over brown rice. Perfect!!

I ordered myself a nice 4 star Chicken Green Curry ordered Brandon some Phad Thai and off we went to Siam Pura, a little Thai place by our house. My favorite Thai places in West Seattle are Bang Bar and Buddha Ruksa, but they were both too far away from home..Plus Siam Pura is under new management so it was worth a try. Glad we did, it was pretty good. I still love my Bangbar, but this is a nice quick trip from our home.

Curling up on the couch with my cozy yummy treat was exactly what Monday called for…and the episode of Game of Thrones was intense. Overall a good Monday night after a crazy busy day! Take that gluten/dairy free meal Mister Milkbread Monster. Booh Yah!

    Paradise Eating at Avalon!

I was lucky enough to be invited to the pre-screening of Breaking Dawn last night with one of my good girlfriends. But so we would get to catch up before the movie based on a book we both devoured, we decided to go out and grab a bite! Easy, we both live in West Seattle so we picked Avalon!

We were greeted warmly and informed, there would be a band. We chose a seat further away, so we could chat and listen. The band was fantastic! (they do this on Thursday nights, I highly recommend it!)  When it came to the menu I wasn’t sure what to do, but I had met one of the owners during my previous visit about a month ago and she told me to ask next time I was in. I ate things I shouldn’t that night! WOOPS…(but boy was that Duck Flatbread good. if you can have gluten and cheese. GO EAT THIS!)

Our waiter arrived and I told him about my dietary restrictions AND that I don’t really eat much seafood because I dont’ care for the stuff. He smiled told me what I could have and I picked the vegetable Risotto. He confirmed with the kitchen that it wouldn’t even have a hint of butter. “No Problem” I was told!

    Delicious vegetable Risotto!

Now one may suspect that taking all the yummy fats and cream out of Risotto lessens the experience. Well, I’m not sure what the team at Avalon did but my meal was truly excellent. My Gluten/Dairy eating friend loved the bread and her Seafood Risotto!

After my meal I met the owner Deborah and she reiterated that they are always happy to work with someones dietary restrictions. So Go there…no matter what your food issues are I have 100% faith that they can work with you!

Other than Breaking Dawn being one of the very worst movies ever made (Although it did make us laugh out loud a few times due to it’s cheesiness and absurdity!), it was a great success, very tasty and easy peasy for me. (I’m guessing my dinner was about 10 points for the Risotto and 4 for the amazing vino!)

    Captain Picky Pants Eats Out

Last night was girls night out. So, I had to take on the eating out challenge on again.  We walked into Daniels in South Lake Union with my girlfriends with some hesitancy in having to deal with food outside of my home. I have been to Daniels many times and enjoy their food, but never when I was paying any attention to my allergies or weight. I always worry since I really hate being a bother and seeming like Captain Picky Pants. But because of this blog, I got some courage and I decided to give it a gluten/dairy free go again.

The waitress came to our table flipping her long brown hair over her shoulder and my stomach turned into a knot. It was my time to step up and ask my “picky pants” gluten and dairy free question.  To my surprise, not only did the waitress smile and say “Of Course!” But she also rambled off exactly what on the menu was and was not gluten and dairy free. I looked at her in awe, then I tested her knowledge because this seemed WAY too easy.  I asked “What about the Steak Tar Tar?” And she got a big smile on her heart shaped face and said “No, that won’t work for you.  It has soy sauce in it.” Again, curious I asked “But the Tuna you mentioned has ponzu. Doesn’t that have gluten.” Again, she clarified that she knew their menu inside and out, their ponzu had no gluten.

Done and done! I got the wonderful low calorie seared tuna and, as my waitress mentioned, removed the won ton wrappers to the side of the plate. It was not only a fantastic, low calorie meal and a fun evening with my friends, but it was yet another great experience.  Now I can not help but wonder, was I just overly sensitive before or has public view changed so much that I am no longer seen as picky, but as someone they wish to help? I’m not sure but I love the help and the ease of eating out!

    Restaurant Week Fail!

Every year I look forward to delighting my taste buds with all kinds of treats made by often very talented chefs around the Seattle area! Why is this so special to me you may ask? Easy I normally go to a new restaurant and try an entree and maybe share an appetizer, but Restaurant Week gives you 3 courses for $28 and if I go with Brandon or a friend I get to try so much more!

    The MilkBread Monsters Evil Plot!

This year I was going to be a good girl and try to see if I could enjoy this $28 extravaganza of food BUT stay within my diet. Not only did I miss this while seated at the West Seattle wonder Spring Hill, eating Grilled Pear and Gorgonzola Salad followed by Hangar Steak over creamy mashed potatoes then finished with a Chocolate Pots de Creme! I did suffer when I got home, but the food was so incredibly amazing I didn’t regret it too much!

As if this wasn’t bad enough a few nights later I went to Icon for dinner with 2 friends! Another amazing meal filled with no-no’s for me. Although as I write this I’m starting to see a theme! That night I had a tasty Mixed Green Salad, followed by Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf in some more creamy mashed potatoes and finished it off with a chocolate cupcake. To be honest, the cupcake wasn’t that good yet I ate over half until My belly rebelled with a good cramping. Ugh!

What does all this have in common, Mashed Potatoes! No, seriously the issue is I completely ignored the wonderful yet easy experience I had at Teatro where they gave me amazing food within my diet restrictions, and I threw that all away without even asking either of these great restaurants if they could alter the dishes for me. Ah Mr. Milkbread Monster, I have your number, I learned my lesson and I am commin’ to get you! I need to stop with this shy thing, I’m not shy in most of my life, but why here!?! Next time I will ask!
